MILITARY
Here we are looking for pictures of our past Watson students along with short writings about their military service and military assignments.  Please submit you material or you will tire of Ol' Bill Covey's not so interesting assignments in the United Sates Army.
At left we have Toy "Lit" Humphreys, Class of 1947.  representing the United States Air Force.  No further information is available.  Perhaps someone can help us out here.
At right we can plainly see Toy and Troy "Big & Lit" Humphreys, Class of 1947.  I wish I could help you more but I don't know which is which.  Perhaps help will be forthcoming for one of our visitors to the site.
Here are Toy and Troy, or is it Troy and Toy Humphreys working as Radar Repairmen in the United States Air Force.  They are both graduates of Watson High School in the year 1947.  Beyond that, I need some help here.
At right you will see Chief Warrant Officer Billy Charles Covey, 2nd from left, with his wife, Angela Jane Covey at his left.  Billy Charles is a 1952 Graduate of Watson High School.  This picture was taken somewhere in Sussex, either Brighton or Hove, England.  The group was about to attend a wedding on the Sussex Downs.  Billy Charles retired from the army in 1974 as the Post Supply Officer at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas.
Staff Sergeant Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952, in late 1964 in Phu Loi, Vietnam.  He was a member of Advisory Team 70.  This team gave the advisory effort to the Vietnamese 5th Infantry Division.  Specifically, Billy Charles spent a lot of time with the Strategic Hamelet program and received the Vietnamese Medal for Honor, from the Vietnamese government.
SP3 Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952.  This picture was made in Kleber Kaserne, Kaiserslautern, Germany in 1955.
Private First Class Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952, in Kleber Kaserne, Kaiserslautern, Germany. This picture was taken in 1955.
Sp3 Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952.  This picture was taken upon graduation from the Seventh Army Non-Commissioned Officer Academy in Munich, Germany in 1956.
At left you will see Airman Charles Ernest Marlow.  Chuck, Class of 1952, attended Watson School for a couple of days before it was determined that he lived in the Dumas School District.  He then went off to Dumas but it was Watson's loss.  Never mind, he qualifies as a person to be included in the Watson Yellow Jacket because he married Lois Rowe, Class of 1955, a marriage that is still very sound after more than fifty years.  It is interesting to note that chuck and Lois were stationed in England during the same period as Billy Charles Covey and Angela Jane Covey back in 1960.  They had at least one good visit during this period.  Chuck was flying as a gunner in a B-47 at the time as I recall.
Sp3 Billy Charles Covey in the barracks at Kleber Kaserne, Kaiserslautern, Germany.  This picture was taken in 1957 just before his return to the United States.
At left is Army Air Corps Cadet Robert H. "Bobby" Willis, Class of 1938.  This picture was taken around 1942 while he was still a cadet.  He later earned his commission and wings and flew some 35 or more combat missions in Europe.  He flew both the B-24 and B-17 Bombers.
This is a picture of Jack Duckworth, Class of 1942.  Jack entered the United States Army in May of 1942.  It appears that he entered the service immediately after graduation.  At any rate, the picture was scanned from a newspaper clipping and is the only likeness that can be found by this writer.
At left we have Private W. C. Lloyd, United States Marine Corps, Class of 1938.  Private Lloyd was inducted into service on 28 March 1944.  This picture is the only likeness available and was scanned from a newspaper clipping.  Any other photographs of this past student will be greatly appreciated.
At right stands SP4 Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952.  This picture was taken in Hove, Sussex, England in 1958.
MILITARY PICTURES OF YOUR WEB MASTER WILL BE REPLACED BY OTHERS WHO SERVED IN THE ARMED SERVICES AFTER HAVING ATTENDED SCHOOL IN WATSON.
At left stands SP4 Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952 as he appeared in Hove, Sussex, England in 1958.
JUST SEND ME SOME PICTURES AND WE CAN START RIDDING OURSELVES OF OL' BILL COVEY ON THIS PAGE
Specialist Dallas Lee Sosebee, grandson of Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952.
Private Kevin Viner Covey, son of Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952.  This pic;ture was taken at Fort Jackson, South Carolina in 1991.
These soldiers are the sons of Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952.  At left is Staff Sergeang Mark Evert Covey and at his left is Private Kevin Viner Covey.  This picture was taken at Fort Jackson, South Carolina in 1991.
At left is Staff Sergeant Aaron Neubauer the husband of Kelley Jane Covey who is the daughter of Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952.  In short, this is Billy Charles' son-in-law.  This picture was taken in 2009 at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri just minutes after the award of the coveted SAPPER Tab.  The Sapper Tab is the Army Engineer version of the Ranger Tab.
Private First Class Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952,  is in the center of this group.  This picture was taken in 1954 at Fort Hood, Texas.  Private Covey worked at the Post Signal Property Office as a Clerk Typist while at this assignment.
For Audie Hawkins, Class of 1953, her husband actually, notice the III Corps patch above the "US Army" above the left shirt pocket.  Armor folks used to wear their patch there and that goes for the corps in which ther division was assigned.
First Lieutenant Robert H. "Bobby" Willis, Class of 1938,  and co-pilot Lieutenant Jeff Burnett of Dumas, Arkansas have just returned from a bombing run over refineries in Merseburg,  Germany.  The date of this picture runs into the many more dates during World War II and only the image has been preserved.  The pictutre was scanned from a yellowing newspaper clipping.

Sergeant Robert Irby, Class of 1942, is remembered here by a a yellowing newspaper clipping.  Even the year has gone missing with but the date, November 10, remaining.  Let us remember the "Greatest Generation" and the sacrifices made during this war where literally millions paid with their lives.  This short reminder is posted just in case our memories dim into nothingness.
This, and the picture following, outlines the Military History of Mark A. Hochstetler, son of Bonnie Allen Hochstetler, Class of 1955.  Mark joined the navy and took his basic training in San Diego, California from January 1981 through March 1981.  He then went to Great Lakes, Chicago and went to Propulsion Engineering Basic School, Boiler Technician "A" School and Boiler TYechnician 6YO School from March 1981 to September 1981.

From July 2008 to present he has been assigned to USS Boxer (LHD-4) a Wasp Class Amphibious Assault Ship homeported in San Diego, California.

At this time the ship is in dry dock.  Mark will stay in San Diego with the ship until July 2010 when he will be assigned back to Norfolk, Virginia where his wife Colleen, son Kevin, son Brendan and daughter Jenna live.
Mark has earned a 4-year undergraduate degree in Training and Education as well as a graduate degree in Management while on active duty.
Standing in the center of the three is Edmond Jones, Class of 2004 and his father, Carlton Jones Class of 1981.  The lady at his left is presumed to be his mother.   Edmond is the grandson of Juanita Cox Jones, Class of 1961 and C. B. Jones, Class of 1961.
Edmond Jones, Class of 2004, stands with his sister Emili Jones Del Rio.  Edmond is the son of Carlton Jones, Class of 1981, and the grand-son of Juanita Cox Jones, Class of 1961, and C. B. Jones, Class of 1961.
Edmond Jones, Class of 2004, is standing between his grandfather, C.B. Jones, Class of 1961 and his grandmother, Juanita Cox Jones, Class of 1961.
Edmond Jones, Class of 2004, is shown here in 2009.  He is the son of Carlton Jones, Class of 1981 and the grandson of Juanita Cox Jones and C.B. Jones, both of the Class of 1961.
The young Private First Class Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952, at the right of the pictutre sporting the Seventh United States Army shoulder patch is standing with a friend outside the American Express Office in downtown Kaiserslautern, Germany in 1955.  American Express was the only place a soldier could change his script into German Marks...the only legal place, that is.  We didn't get American money in those days.  Black market was rampant.
The soldier at right is none other than Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952.  This picture was taken in Kleber Kaserne, Kaiserslautern, Germany in 1955.  The soldier as left is Bruce C. Livergood from Tulsa, Oklahoma.
At right stands Jerry Pennington, Class of 1963.  This picture was taken in 1966 in Vietnam.
At left you will see Jerry Pennington as he appeared in 1967.  Obviously Jerry served in the United States Army.  Jerry is a graduate of Watson High School in 1963.
At right is Airman Donald Pennington, Class of 1970, as he appeared in 1974 in the uniform of the United States Air Force.
The soldier on the left is Specialist Dallas Lee Sosebee, the grandson of Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952, and Angela Jane Hudson Covey.  This picture was taken at Fort Sill, Oklahoma in March 2010.
Specialist Dallas Lee Sosebee, grandson of Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952, and Angela Jane Hudson Covey from Hove, Sussex, England.  This picture was taken in March of 2010 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.  Within a couple of days from this time he will be heading to Fort Benning, Georgia for infantry training.
Specialist Dallas Lee Sosebee, grandson of Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952, and Angela Jane Hudson Covey of Avondale College, Hove Sussex, England.
Brenda Bates at both left and right is of the Class of 1975.  These pictures were made at Fort Jackson, South Carolina around the year 1975.  The date shown for the Fort Jackson pictures are not certain.  It was, however, a young Miss, or was it Private, Bates posing for these pictures.
I can't say with certainty when this picture was taken but a good estimate would be 1942 since the war didn't officially start until December 1941.  At any rate, the Seaman shown is Everett Taylor, Class of 1940.
At right you will see Noble Roberts.  I don't know his rank at the time but he was a member of the United States Coast Guard and this picture was taken in 1944.  Noble is the husband of Frances Maxson Roberts, Class of 1942.  Noble served on a LST in the Pacific during World War II.  For the uninitiated, LST comes from Landing Ship Tank.  I assure you that they were used for more than transporting tanks during the war.
At left is Noble Roberts, United States Coast Guard as he appeared in 1943.  Noble is the husband of Frances Maxson Roberts, Class of 1942.  I still don't know his rank at the time of this picture but he was a Signalman.
At right Coast Guard Signalman 3rd Class Noble Roberts signals a passing ship in the North China Sea in 1945. Noble is the husband of Frances Maxson Roberts, Class of 1942.
At left is Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952, and his new wife, Angela Jane Hudson Covey.  To be honest, this wasn't our wedding picture at all.  It seems that we, almost on the day of her arrival in Watson, very quickly headed for Greenville, Mississippi for a Justice of the Peace wedding.  I guess the wedding took though.  Within a couple of months of this posting we celebrated 53 years of marriage.  The picture was taken at the Pine Bluff Arsenal in July of 1957.  The picture was for Jack and Queenie Hudson in Hove, Sussex, England, father and mother of the bride.  I don't think they ever really believed that there was a white wedding.  Still, I was accepted into the Hudson family even though I talked funny.
The sailor at right didn't come from Watson.  He lived a part of his life and died there though.  Following is taken from a short story told by Frances Maxson Roberts, Class of 1942, and Noble Roberts.

Seaweed, mascot of LST 793.  The dog was picked up as a little flea bitten puppy as the ship passed through the Panama Canal going toward the Pacific Ocean.  The captain gave the dog to Noble to bring back to the farm when the war ended.  When Seaweed died, Noble buried him about 300 yards from Cook's Ramp under a big sycamore tree.

You see, Seaweed was not from Watson, but he was of Watson.  A "Seaweed" could be found on many vessels during World War II and was very much a part of the crew.  I am quite certain that this "Seaweed" is still remembered by many more sailors than just Noble Roberts.
The pictutre at left is the LST 793, the ship of Noble Roberts, husband of Frances Maxon, Class of 1942.  It was also the home of Seaweed, the ship mascot who lived the remainder of his life, after the war, in the Watson, Arkansas area. Seaweed is shown above.
The Airman at right is none other than Thurman Gilbreth, Class of 1952, at Shepherd Air Force Base, Texas in 1951.

At left we have Edward Irby, Class of 1951.  The fact is, Edward did not graduate with his class in 1951.  Instead, he joined the United States Air Force.  He is shown in the picture at left in the uniform of an Airman Third Class at Shephard Air Force Bace, Texas.  The picture is blurred but many thanks are still owed Thurman Gilbreth, Class of 1952, for loaning the picture to me for scanning.
The United States Army soldier at right is Roger "Pete" Gilbreth, Class of 1951.  The picture was furnished by his brother, Thurman Gilbreth, Class of 1952.  It is somewhat difficult to see but the shoulder patch indicates that he was in the Fourth United States Army when the picture was taken.  A notation on the back of the picture states that he was in Korea in 1953.  It may well be that the picture was actually taken earlier in the United States or he simply had not changed the patches at the time the picture was made.  At any rate Roger served in Korea and the United States in a time in or around 1953.
Sergeant Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952 is standing at the extreme right.  The picture was taken of what I recall to be Headquarters Platoon, 23rd Transportation Company, a Seventh Army Unit attached to the 8th Infantry Division in Baumholder, Germany in 1958.  It is interesting to note that the First Sergeant sitting in the center of the first row was from Danville, Yell County, Arkansas and we knew a lot of the same people.  It is a small world to be sure.
The two airman at the left of the picture are Edward Irby, Class of 1951 and Thurman Gilbreth, Class of 1952.  According to Thurman Gilbreth the picture was taken at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas in 1950.  The aircraft shown is probably a World War II aircraft installed as a monument since Lackland was a training base and did not have an active runway.  In short, it was for picture taking and the like. Thanks to Thurman for giving us the picture.
Although the picture is somewhat blurred, it is still a representation of Airman Second Class Thurman Gilbreth, Class of 1952.  The picture was taken at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.  Thanks for the picture Thurman.
At left is Leonard Othel "Lefty" Gilbreth at age 19 in 1948.  Lefty was stationed in the Philippines at the time this picture was taken in 1948.  I have no record of Lefty having attended school in Watson but he was the brother of Thurman Gilbreth, Class of 1952, Grady "Joe" Gilbreth, Class of 1946,  and Roger "Pete" Gilbreth, Class of 1951.
In the picture at right stand Leonard "Lefty" Gilbreth, the army man, and Grady "Joe" Gilbreth, the navy man at right.  The picture was taken in the Philippines around 1945 or 1946.  Grady "Joe" Gilbreth was of the Class of 1946.  Lefty is now shown in our files as having attended school in Watson.  I am still trying to determine if he attended school in Watson for I believe he did.
At the picture on the left is Master Sergeant Mark Evert Covey on the far right of the picture.  Mark is the son of Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952, and Angela Jane Hudson covey.  This picture was taken at Balad, Iraq.
At right is Master Sergeant Mark Evert Covey, son of Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952, and Angela Jane Hudson Covey.  Thje picture was taken in Balad, Iraq..
At the right of the picture is Master Sergeant Mark Evert Covey with his best friend Command Sergeant Major Miller in Balad, Iraq. Mark is the son of Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952, and Angela Jane Hudson Covey.
Master Sergeant Mark Evert Covey is at the right of the picture.  Mark is the son of Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952, and Angela Jane Hudson Covey.  The picture was taken in Balad, Iraq.
The following has been copied exactly as printed in an undated newspaper photograph.

Pfc. E. J. Walker of the Marines was inducted Nov. 18, 1943, trained in San Diego, and has been in the South Pacific since March, 1, 1944.  His wife, the former Miss Pearl Watts, resides in Watson.

Nothing more is known about this gentleman at the time of this writing.
At right is Corporal Jimmy C. Ingram, Class of 1941.  This picture was taken during World War II but no information was given on this undated newspaper photograph.
Here we have Specialist Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952 holding his daughter Deborah Mary Covey.  His wife Angela Jane Hudson Covey is holding Neil Foster Covey.  The picture was taken in 1959 in Kaiserslautern, Germany.
Staff Sergeant Aaron Neubauer with his wife Kelley Jane Covey Neubauer.  This picture was taken in June of 2010 on the night before Aaron departed for his fifth deployment, four of which was, and is, a combat zone.  He had already served three tours in Iraq and at the time of this picture was awaiting shipment to Afghanistan.  Aaron is a Combat Engineer and a Sapper.
At right you will see Master Sergeant Charles Ernest Marlow, one day student of Watson High School and the husband of Lois Rowe Marlow, Class of 1955.
This picture was taken in July of 1972, the month he retired from the United States Air Force.
Above stands Master Sergeant Charles Ernest Marlow, husband of Lois Rowe Marlow Class of 1955.  Charles Ernest Marlow.  This picture was taken as he had just finished his 200th combat mission over South Vietnam.  Chuck was a B-52 gunner of the last ten years of his air force service.
Here we have Sergeant First Class Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952, while serving as the Operations and Intelligence Advisor to Duc Long District, Chuong Thien Province in the Republic of Vietnam.  It is obvious that much weight had been lost at the taking of this picture.  This picture was taken just before his R&R to Singapore where he met his wife Angela Jane Hudson Covey.  At first she didn't know him when he got off the aircraft as he had lost some 56 pounds since their last being together.  A wonderful week in the Raffles Hotel and tons of food and rest put him back on the road to recovery.  Incidently, much more than the lost 56 pounds now grace the frame of this past student and past soldier.
Chief Warrant Officer Billy Charles Covey and his wife, Angela Jane Hudson Covey, have just attended a wedding on the Sussex Downs in England.  This picture was taken in 1970.  The Coveys have celebrated their 53rd anniversary at this posting.  Time does fly.
Specialist Dallas Lee Sosebee, the grandson of Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952 and Angela Jane Hudson Covey.  This picture was taken in August of 2010 at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952 with his wife Angela Jane Hudson Covey, and left to right Mark Evert Covey, Deborah Mary Covey, and Neil Foster Covey.  This picture was taken in 1965 at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
The shoulder insignia, or patch worn on the left shoulder of both United States Army Officers and Enlisted Men represents the organization in which the individual is currently serving.  When you see an insignia on the right sleeve, it indicates that the soldier served in a combat zone with that organization.  The patches above were worn by Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952 while serving in the Republic of Vietnam and were worn on both the left and right sleeve.  Left to right are the insignia of the 1st Cavalry Division, Military Assistance Command Vietnam, and the Military Assistance and Advisory Group - Vietnam.
At right is the shoulder insignia for the United States Army 5th Armored Division.  This patch was worn on the left sleeve of both Hurshell Qualls and Billy Charles Covey during the summer of 1954.  Both were privates taking basic training at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas.
At left is the 4th United States Army patch as worn by:
Roger "Pete" Gilbreathm Class of 1953.  Pete wore this patch around 1954.
Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952.  Bill wore this patch in 1961 and again in 191965.
This patch was worn by:
Robert H. "Bobby" Willis, Class of 1938, during World War II.  The Air Force no longer wears shoulder patches but it should be remembered that the air arm of our armed forces at the time Bobby wore it was the Army Air Corps.

At left can be seen the insignia called the Overseas Bar or Hershey Bar.  It is to be worn by US Army personnel that served in a combat zone only.  Normal overseas duty does not qualifiy the Hershey Bar for wear.  Each bar represents six (6) months and is worn on the lower right sleeve of the Class "A" Uniform.
Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952 wears four (4) bars.

2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment.  Worn by Staff Sergeant Aaron Frederick Neubauer.  He is also authorized to wear this patch on his right sleeve to indicate that he served with the organization in a combat zone.  Serteant Neubauer received the Army Commendation Medal for Valor for his action under fire.  Serteant Neubauer is the husband of Kelley Jane Covey Neubauer the daughter of Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952.
39th Infantry Brigade.  This patch was worn by Sergeant Aaron Neubauer the husband of Kelley Jane Covey Neubauer, daughter of Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952

188th Fighter Wing (Arkansas Air National Guard).  Worn by Dallas Lee Sosebee, son of Deborah Mary Covey Bowers, daughter of Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952, and Angela Jane Hudson Covey.
These are the crests worn on the epulets of the Class "A" uniform of the army.  The crests represent the 32nd Armor.  The crests were worn by Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952, while serving in the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 32nd Armor of the 3rd Armored Division in 1970 - 1972 in Friedberg, Germany.  It is interesting to note that this is the very same company in which Elvis Pressley served several years before.  If you look closely when you see Elvis in uniform in his movies you will see these crests being worn.  Elvis was thought of on the same level as king in Friedberg and Bad Nauheim, not because of his singing, for his financial support of an orphanage.  Every German was aware of it.

Chief Warrant Officer Billy Charles Covey, Class of 1952 with his wife Angela Jane Hudson Covey.  The picture was taken in 1973 at their home in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
At left is Staff Sergeant Aaron Neubauer, son-in-law of Billy Charles Covey Class of 1952 and Angela Jane Hudson Covey.  This picture was taken in the summer of 2010 in Afghanistan.  Kids are the same all over the world and Afghanistani children appear to be no different.
